What to Wear
Check out the slideshow for examples of attire to wear at our wedding and scroll down to view a complete list of Western & non-Western clothing tips.
COLORS TO WEAR (Whether you choose Ethnic wear or Western dress)
It is better to avoid pure white and black at any of the wedding events since they are considered colors of mourning and loss.
WOMEN: Bright colors are considered most auspicious at Asian weddings functions and pastels are also acceptable, especially in the summer. Try not to wear bright red or pink as this is traditionally reserved for the bride and you wouldn't want to outshine her on her special day!
MEN: They may get away with a black suit at the religious ceremony. At most Sikh weddings the men will wear a western suit usually in dark color like blue, brown, grey and some might even choose to wear a lighter color suit such as cream, beige, etc. Shirts and ties should be in the lighter shades if possible (white, cream, blues, greens, pinks, etc.).
BRIDE & GROOM: The bride is dressed in traditional wear with a heavy gold-embroidered shawl (chunni or dupatta) that covers her head. The groom is generally dressed in traditional shirt (sherwani) and trousers. He also wears a red or dark pink turban and carries a coloured scarf (pulla).

If you would like to wear Traditional Indian outfits to the Anand Karaj and/or Reception, more power to you! Here are some options to help you get started:
Traditional Dress MEN: Some men will wear traditional Punjabi or ethnic clothing consisting of a long shirt and tight pants. LADIES: The three most typical traditional outfits at an Indian wedding will be the Salwar Kameez (a long shirt with pants underneath), Sari (a long piece of fabric draped and wrapped around the body) or Lengha (a shirt and long skirt) for women. All 3 types are usually embroidered and colorful. The Salwar Kameez and Lengha are usually worn with a chunni, which is a scarf, that can be put over the head when entering a place of worship (salwar kameez SHOULD BE WORN AT THE TEMPLE/GURDWARA). Saris and lenghas are more popular for wearing to the Reception and SHOULD BE WORN ON SUNDAY'S RECEPTION OR THURSDAY'S SANGEET OR FRIDAY'S MEHNDI PARTY only because they show more skin and are not considered appropriate attire for our temple function on Saturday. Here are two sites that outline the types of traditional outfits for men and women you may want to check out to see pictures and full descriptions: http://www.iloveindia.com/indian-clothing/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clothing_in_India |
